Why the industry needs Microsoft
The public isn't going to run out to the nearest Best Buy to get a computer that's going to run XP 40% faster. Intel has tried in the past to create buzz about their processors (remember all those dancers in a clean room advertising MMX?), but the vast majority of folks really aren't paying attention to that little sticker on the front of the case that says AMD or Intel. Also, there are people who bought 1.8GHz XP boxes 3 or 4 years ago who are still surfing the web and writing e-mails and school reports just fine, thank you.

When somebody sees Vista, now THAT will be new and different. The buzz generated by Microsoft (and you must admit, they CAN market their products) advertizing their 64-bit OS with gobs of eye candy plus a few new capabilities, more-or-less concurrent with the new 64-bit architecture from Intel and upcoming AMD designs, will push PC sales significantly higher in 2007. The faster processors and more capable OS may also open new doors for what we can do with our PCs after years of stagnation.
