AMD to shell out $5.4 billion for ATI

Mind-numbingly brilliant

Seperating the GPU from the CPU has always been silliness. We have oddball hacks like AGP and, more recently, PCI Express to speed up the throughput between the two. Why do that when you can put it all into a single multi-core chip? Microsoft did this with their XBox. It was a smart move since there is almost no latency when its chip on chip as compared to running through the board with AGP or PCI Express.

As for AMD, they can use ATIs technology to put the graphics processor on the single die as part of their multicore technology. Currently AMD is still the market leader and combining the technology could forge the way for a better future. We might even get standard opcodes for graphic processes!!

Horray for the new future of true media processors!
