Hate IGPs all you want ...
... but for MOST users, they're really all that's required. The average web surfing emailing grandmother doesn't play Halo 2 on her PC. She surfs the web, looks at pix of the grandbabies, and forwards a few jokes to unsuspecting relatives who already have filters set up for anything from her with "Fw" in the subject line.

I've owned several integrated graphics machines, and never had trouble with any of them. Saved me 40 or 50 bucks over buying a separate low-end card too. The only integrated parts I consistently have to buy an add-in for is Networking - whether modem or 10/100. They either start as crap, or go that way within a week or two. So a $15 NIC will always occupy one of my PCI slots.

Now imagine the advantages of your graphics chip running full-speed right on the main CPU(s) - no system bus bottlenecks ... direct access to the latest high speed DDR3 RAM ... maybe an extra mobo slot for a dedicated stick of video RAM separate from the system RAM. Wouldn't it be pretty sweet to be able to pop a 2GB stick into your GPU if you find 512MB or 1GB suddenly just isn't enough? There ARE some interesting possibilities from the merger.

As has already been spreading around the web, short term, this looks like a stupid move for AMD. Long term ... might not be so bad. But it's going to hurt their bottom line for a few years.
