Last I knew, Intel just released the new chips, and they are saying a new quad-core will be out in 6 months instead of 12. While this is no feat for them, since it's the same process that gave Intel their first dual-core processor (slap two pieces of silicon on one insulator), I see this as a power play for Wall Street. There is no benefit to this early release, especially on the desktop, where early adopters will get stuck with Linux/BSD because Vista isn't out yet and XP won't run on 4 cores without a major patch (not that this is a bad thing).
This announcement will really inflate Intel's outlook in the market, only to pop once sales don't climb as people decide to wait for the new chip, then wait for the new OS that makes the new chip usable. Unless Intel is planning to increase production and R&D to pump out new chips like this every 6 months regularly, they are setting themselves up to fall again.
Who knows, maybe Paul will start throwing chairs next year instead of shuffling them. - Posted by: jheine Posted on: 07/20/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
