AMD is used to tough competition. It has been in alot deeper trouble than this in it's 30 year history. The rules have been rewritten. AMD has been the one putting the hurt on Intel for the first time in 30 years...and you still think this temporary leapfrog by Intel means AMD is in deep trouble? No, my friend...this only means that there's good competition going on.

Intel's inventory problem is quite important. They have a significant volume of inventory built up. If they sell it at deeply discounted prices, what happens to production? Does Conroe inventory build up while people are buying Netburst CPUs at "steal" prices? Or do the Netburst CPUs end up not selling...and Intel has to write off a huge number of units as a loss?

Having the better product at a given point in time doesn't always translate to better business execution. AMD is better positioned from the business standpoint, and you can bet they are not standing still on the technical side. There are a few improvements due this fall. The big ones are next year (65-nm process). Meanwhile, they can afford a little lag because the price war won't hurt them as badly as it will Intel - AMD isn't get pinched between its latest products and old inventory like Intel will. That's probably a billion dollars for Intel down the drain.
