Intel's current memory design has enough problems feeding single and dual core chips. Duct taping two dual-core chips together is just going to make things worse. Worse still is since they'll be separate chips then there will either be some cache-coherency kludge or they're going to have to go back to the main bus for cache transfers between the two chips.

This is where AMD's multi-core design is far superior to Intel's. Each core has its own memory controller and bandwidth to the memory rather than everyone filtering through a single controller. This means as each new chip is added it gets its own traces to memory. (This does of course increase the complexity of the motherboard but throughput is critical.)
