- On the threshold of a revolution
-
It means that "real world" desktop apps won't see great speed improvements with either Intel's or AMD's new quad-core chips IN THE SHORT TERM, though you can expect marketing hype and selected benchmark tests with specialized apps to say otherwise.
I think over the next 5 to 10 years, we'll see a revolution in programming to start using multicore processing. The percentage of existing computers that are multicore/multiprocessor today, I would think, is less than 1 percent (high-end servers, mainframes, and supercomputers combined probably number in the high hundreds of thousands or low millions, not hundreds of millions). As all new PCs move to multicore over the next year or two, we'll see that percentage move into double digits, with especially large penetration into business and gaming markets, two groups that aren't afraid to spend money on software. I fully expect new programming paradigms to develop to harness the power of multicore processing as every programmmer seeking enhanced performance of their software on the PC will have to consider how to use cores optimally for the present as well as the 8- and 16-core future. This will be easier with some apps than others, but eventually all will benefit. - Posted by: Rodney Davis Posted on: 07/20/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
