FUD and Quality Concerns
FUD - Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt>

Intel is having a hard time competing so it announces this so far into the future that it's trying the FUD play rather than having something of real substance to offer. AMD, as has been its way, has been a bit more reserved, delaying announcements until they have something of substances to offer. That's much harder to do but does attest to a better company.

Quality concerns

So imagine you are an engineer at Intel right now. You've put your heart and soul into this next chip if, for no other reason, you've got pride on the line. You've squeezed every last moment out of your project plan. It'll be tough but your group can do it. PaulO comes in, wipes 3 to 6 months off your development cycle, says produce or else, then walks off, proud that he has managed Intel.

We've all been there. We've all seen manager pull this stunt. So tell me what goes? One thing for sure: Quality is not Job 1 at Intel. You were already doing 10 to 12 hours a day. You'll just have to increase that to longer days, weekends, cutting corners. You get burned out, productivity suffers, the suits do the ole "produce or your fired" dance.

Which processor would you want?
