You are clearly detached from reality.
Power5, 5+ (and soon Power 6 and 7) are the most successful high-end nicro-processors in the HPC space. Itanium WAS in the same space 2 and 1/2 years ago where it was competing with Power4.

Currently, even the Montecito has a 25-30% LOWER perfrmance than Power5+ processors. That is WHY SGI went down the tubes.


As for the Sparc, it competes in the "business" server arena. The Ultra IV is "OK" but the T1 and T2 are better for transaction / http workloads. Power5 is doing well here too.

Unfortunately Itanium got a much needed refresh too late to survive. Unless ofcourse Intel presents a version that can compete favorably with the Power5+ and that there are vendors which are ready to ship READY systems with it. Sorry this is far from happening.


It's just Intel can do one thig at a time ONLY. They improved their Xeons to compete with AMD. Nothing else ....
