Sun appears to have the inside track with this announcement. They have been positioning for energy conservation for quite a while - especially in server farms... However, we just finished test driving the T-1000 (8 cores) cool thread machines. The biggest drawback to the T-1000 is its lack of floating point support (one FP processor to serve all eight cores). For web services and other non-high computational chores, the T-1000 really smokes. However, for our computationally intensive work - it was a total dog - our 1 cpu Dells out performed. Hence for the government - where, I imagine - a fair amount of thier current computational efforts are to web servers and DB servers, the Sun cool threads may really take off. (And Macintosh desktops - 100 watts for the complete machine, including the monitor). Maybe Sun finally can rise again???
