Reduction of power consumption through wise choices represents 10 percent of the solution to Global Warming, according to the inventor of the term Information Super Highway - Al Gore.
His work with Google and the huge power needs of this search engine and internet service provider is one of the reasons Intel decided to obsolete X86 single CPU technology and come out now with multicore multiple CPU chips instead of yeilding to Microsoft's desire for yet faster single CPUs.
The power savings comes from slower CPUs and coding software so that it threads between multiple cores. AMD competition with Intel also comes into play of course.
Take a look at 10mhz speed devices from F5. The heat produced from these requires air conditioning that air conditioning also requiring energy use.
The hidden message here involves open source and particularly Java open source. Vista and all software from Microsoft does not yet take advantage of hardware that relies on threading for speed. The free Open Office and all Java does.
Obviously clients and not just servers should be power saving. The clout of Microsoft is evident in restricting this message to servers only. Kind of sad really.
