Roll your own?
Having recently been trying to decide between building my own high-end pc (mostly for audio/video recording & production), I found after a lot of research that with the specific components I wanted, I could only save about $250 over buying a completed machine from Velocity Micro. A major issue that you overlook when you suggest people build their own machines: if something goes wrong under my warranty period, I just call VM and they send a tech to my house. If I build my own machine, I will have 7-12 different manufacturers that I have to keep track of and deal with for any separate technical issue, try to get RMA's, etc. etc. I have an A+ PC tech cert (no big deal I know but more than most avg. users) so was not phobic about the build itself. Side note: my 5-year old Dimension 8200, after a hard drive upgrade and BeyondTV/ATI 550 tuner purchase, is happily doing DVR duty in my den with no problems and has been running 7/24 for the last 3 months. I can't say the same for my Dell 610 laptop at work - had to replace the system board at 45 days, and without the laptop cooler (thanks Antec) it will sometimes run so hot that it locks and I have to shut it off for 30 min. Bah. I never had that problem when we were an all-IBM shop.
