Check out the latest reviews for laptops and see if Lenovo "really do suck".
We can all give anecdotal evidence about our 1 laptop or the 50 our company bought. But we have to look at how they are really measured. Mean time to failure, Average customer satisfaction issue, Dead on arrival rating.
If you can find any _serious metric_ where Dell is higher than 3rd at the moment I'd love to hear about it. Lenovo and HP outstrip Dell all over the place... ask any serious and independent analyst company.

I replied to Mobiusstrip(loop) about the value of personal time earlier. I would ask you to re-consider the worth of your own personal time before dismissing out of hand the total cost arguement in relation to the home user.
