Not that I just want to "toot" my own horn, but a custom build is viable...
It's not that big of a deal, really...hand select a decent (sufficient say 500 watt or better) case and power supply, a good motherboard from a Mfr. with a good rep for quality, making sure of course that it will accomodate your choice of cpu and graphics (which most mains come with onboard everything anymore). And of course you don't want to be to skinny on memory, drive size requirements will just depend on the user.

I was recently thinking about going on to a 939 so that I could run the PCIE cards, but that was before I discovered Suse,; and suddenly I'm too busy playing with blender to care about maya or zbrush. I may still do it, but it'll be a few months; I don't have to be in a rush. Just kind of wait and see how things play out here. The last Pentium system I enjoyed at all was the older HP vectra P2s'.

Hey, I know what some of you are saying but I still think they were solid machines yeah maybe a few of them were quirky on memory but they settled down once you found the brand they liked. Builders can tell ya machines are in some ways like women, they don't like to be touched by anyone other than their "owner"; sometimes not even then. And they always, computers ALWAYS have minds of their own, well;...at least when you're running windows on them. And I dunno what else to say about that. Hazards of the territory.

My general rules of thumb are, if you HAVE to buy OFF THE SHELF: don't EVER buy anything that says compaq or gateway on it. Other than that I couldn't reall tell ya. I can say that the apple laptops have been a hot item for the unix/linux/aix using gurus I've had the pleasure of rubbing elbows with.
(Sorry to be so winded)
