Yes, but you have all the info on
how exactly the code was compiled and what exactly configuration was in use.

Why would NOT a vendor use an ACTUAL configuration that maximizes the performance? One can use their own judgenment and evaluate the results in the light of the pre-conditions (h/w conf and compilation options) and do extra or inter-polation.

If you are focusing on the SAME sense of "average" conf + usage and you feel that Tom's HW fits this setting, then by all means use their results. If you need to find a box that delives the "best" high end performance then Tom's HW is not a good yardstick.

I doubt that people who need HPC results would look at Tom's site. If I need to know how well a p575 with 16 1.9 power5+ processors stacks up against say a simliarly configured SGI Altix or SUN x86 system, I will definite start from http://www.bench.org . Again this is the starting point and not the final one. Tom's site is a more ad-hoc collection of ad-hoc results on what is their target systems. Not enough for me.

The "benchmarking" at Tom's BBQ/HW ... is not serious.  michael_t | 07/11/06
These articles mention that the Woodcrest is boring and underwhelmed  michael_t | 07/11/06
With Sun, this is not about performance  CattleProd | 07/11/06

SUN's x86_64 servers (Galaxy) are ahead in performance and are pretty  michael_t | 07/11/06
