How Benchmarking Works
Take a look at the www.spec.org website.

Spec does not do anything except collect the results from companies that submit the results. Intel and AMD submit a lot of the results, but more are submitted by system vendors.

Machines which are used to do spec numbers are not realistic configurations. They are maxed out in every aspect--maximum disks, maximum memory, maximum everything.

Frankly, I put more faith into an enthusiast's site such as Tom's than spec. The configurations are more realistic, and the testing is done by someone other than the company who is trying to sell the hardware.
