How about reducing cabling by 90+% ?
What do you think the cost per port upstream is (for big switches, not Cat-5 cabling ??) Ever work in Manhattan where those cables are laid by Union guys ??

Know what percentage of network failures are due to cables ?? Try > 80% !!

You have to llook beyond acqusition costs of sheet metal.
