- OEMs lead to more building their own PC's
-
I think that companies needsin many PC's will develop departments to assemble the needed PC's from competitively priced components prebuilt into 'bare-bones' machines.
Why? Because so-called 'custom' orders aren't very 'custom' and the quality suffers for the 'savings'.
eMachines makes very inexpensive PC's, without many options (you get what comes with it). This is largely because the labor assembling them is not paid much at all (did a prior post refer to drunken prisoners ? --these workers might be prisoners, but cannot afford much drink...).
Gateway has outgrown it's competence. The model that might succeed would be a franchise that assembles from various PC suppliers (like Gigabyte, MSI, Asus, etc.) - only by defining a franchise model and allowing local management and support will this concept be able to grow...and the cost would not be especailly low - it would cost about as much as an OEM box, but be made with custom specified components. Anyone seen any good RAID 0 options in OEM boxes ?
I quit shopping the OEM's because 'inexpensive' boxes are quickly 'bloated' out of the mainstream by MS-Bloatware (what are the hardware requirements for XP ? Of course this is why Linux is gaining acceptance, because it does not force customers to upgrade the entire PC every two years - as Corporations have been doing for too long).
If it were as easy to assemble an Auto, I'd be making my own also... PC components are really fairly easy to pop together, once they are thoughtfully matched and purchased (it's nice to assure that the FSB is same as the CPU likes, etc.).
Friends don't let friends buy OEM PC's...
Watch for a 'new' eMachines to appear and compete anew - they did well squeezing an extra $50 Million out of the deal (does Gateway have any idea what it's bought ?!). - Posted by: Dilbert-Tom Posted on: 03/12/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
