- Anonymity is not necessary for privacy
- While everyone should be entitled to a large measure of privacy to fend off spammers, hackers, and the like (owning 31 domains my self, I know what it's like to have your personal info available to every Viagra dealer on the planet), data does need to be available to registrars to legitimately contact domain owners and administrators about legitimate issues. Data also needs to be available to ferret out those that would use domains to set up websites for illegal activity. This data does not need to be available to the public, and it would be an easy matter to restructure the database categories so that all private personal information fields on a registration form are not dispoayed in a WHOIS lookup. This does not take rocket science to figure out. It literally could be done now, in real time, without disruption to the internet or any critical services. The only information about a domain that even needs to be seen by the public (and most likely only for legitimate research purposes), is the date the domain name was created, when it will expire, and perhaps the technical contact info, in case there are a large number of people that can't access the website. Even the DNS server info doesn't need to be publicly available, which might help eliminate DDoS attacks or hijacking of domains. For this process to take months or years to work out just demonstrates the amount of red tape that exists in the system which, in the end, will make it ever more difficult for the internet to mature and expand.
