Pick your fights ----4 socket...amd rules....
Dell, as you know, will be selling the AMD Opteron (dual core chipset) but according to Dell. not likely til end of year. Dell states that it will only sell the AMD dual core Opteron in configurations that beat Intels ?Core 2 Duo? processors (servers?Woodcrest). At the same time Intel is bragging that their new chip, Woodcrest (dual core) which side-by-side beats AMD 2005 Opteron.

But for higher end servers using two or more sockets, the story changes?.

ANANDTech was allowed to review the single processor match-up and states, ?As we?ve seen in past benchmarks, the FSB has been a thorn in Intel?s side, especially in the quad socket systems. Whether or not the new architectural changes that Intel has made with Woodcrest will alleviate enough for that pressure to overpower the scalability of (AMD?s) Opteron in a four socket configuration is unknown at this point?.however, at some point the bus bottleneck will be a problem.?

In 2007, when both AMD and Intel are expected to deliver quad core chips Intel's FSB bottlekneck may well cast an even longer shaddow.

More decisively, a Dell rep stated outright that it will be 2007 before Intel makes changes that he can confidently state competes with AMD?s current quad dual-core configuration. ?Dell will not offer AMD?s chipset in configurations that don?t beat Intel?s?

Meanwhile, the AMD Opteron?s in standard two socket configuration pretty well hold their own with new Intel on the benchmarks while only using regular DDR memory.

AMD is not standing still?.For release in two months they will be using DDR2 . That keeps them competitive in the dual socket space and lengthens their lead in the quad socket space beating Intel?s new Woodcrest by even wider margins.
