Yup - this qualifies as chance missed
The move to INTEL has bothered me at some level. I am not a chip expert, but the cachet (big word on the web lately for describing the intangible stuff about Apple) needs to continue the "I'm different" theme and chosing AMD would have been a win in all places as it hits this "difference" and yet runs the existing PC software base.

It comes down to heat I think. IBM PPC chips would not adapt to the laptop needs of Apple, and AMD was not in the range Apple needed to make the big gain in cooling. Or at least AMD did not present their story to Apple in a way they were willing to buy into the idea.

I think the odd thing about all this, is the chip industry as a whole has not jumped to improving the cooling tech across the board before now. Clearly the data center in the past had refrigeration style cooling availablity on hand - but the development of a common processor base - one that had high perf and low power / heat issues would have reduced cost to INTEL/IBM/AMD overall.
