It's not espionage being fought
You're right - this isn't whistleblowing or corruption. It might even fall under the definition of espionage. However, that's not the point.

By suing the reporter, Apple was persecuting the person who acted on a tip, not the one who provided the tip. The espionage, if any, had already been performed before the reporter broadcasted the information.

Granted, Apple was trying to get the identity of the tip provider, but they were going about it the wrong way. Reporters (that term has necessarily become a very loose definition, in today's electronic society) have a right to protect their sources, and that's been proven in the courts time and again.

If Apple wants to persecute the source of the leak, they should do so without making enemies of those whom they frequently use when they wish to promote their products without spending advertising dollars.
