Patents
You do not need to be able to sell products in order to exercise the rights under a patent. It turns out that Kodak *does* sell a goodly amount of imaging products, but that's not the point.

If some college student invents a new technology that turns grammatical errors into healthy snacks, he or she can work with the college to patent the idea, then license it to various manufacturers. It doesn't matter if the student couldn't market the invention personally.

When someone is working for a corporation, the patent is generally filed in the company's name. The company can license the technology to manufacturers, use the technology itself, or both.
