Proof the crack don't smoke itself...
Comparably equipped it's closer to $400, but let's see what you
get for your $400-$500 difference...

Dell E1705 - 8.2lbs vs Apple 17" MacBook Pro - 6.8lbs
2.5 hours battery life vs 4 hours battery life
No Camera, No Remote vs Built-In Video Camera & Remote
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 vs ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
30 days Dell tech support vs 90 days Apple tech support

and about that support...
"Apple is the leading desktop brand in reliability and satisfaction
with tech support." - ConsumerReports.org

I own a Dell desktop and an iMac G5. I also have an IBM laptop
and a 12" PowerBook G4. I've supported every home computer
since the Commodore 64. As well as everything from small
offices with 3 users to 15,000 user corporate networks.

I like to say that Microsoft Windows 2000 sucked the least, but I
really liked Win2K. Microsoft took a turn for the worst after that.
Windows Vista is just trying to copy OS 10.4. Imitation is the
highest form of flattery. That is what they do best after all.
Look at the history with OS/2 warp, Quicken, Citrix. Actually if
Redmond could write code as well as they can do marketing,
people would have nothing to complain about.

I never would have purchased a Mac running OS 9.x or earlier.
Apple took a huge step in the right direction with OS X.
10.0-10.2 left plenty to be desired. 10.3 was as good as Win2K.
In my opinion, 10.4 is the easiest OS to support and rely on, day
in and day out.

Another clip from Consumer Reports..
"More home and entertainment software is available for Windows
computers than for Macs. Apple?s computers, however, have
attractions of their own. The brand repeatedly scores at or near
the top in tech support and has been reliable. Our most recent
survey of desktop computer users, in fact, rated Apple more
than 20 points ahead of all the other computer manufacturers
for technical support. Viruses and spyware are also far less likely
to target Macs than Windows PCs, judging by the number of
viruses estimated to target each computing platform--a ratio of
about 1,000-to-1."
