It's your network and the settings for it
Are you connected to a wi-fi or ethernet network that has
Windows machines on it? If you are, you will often find that the
networking process will slow you down, particularly during
saves.

We had an all-Mac network save one Windows machine but it
was on a Windows 2000 server and guess what? Every "Save As"
was slowed down by the networking process.

I use Airport and Airport Express networks at home with
computers pretty far apart and don't have a slow down. But if
your servers are pre-XP or not Mac OS X, that may explain some
of the pinwheels.
