Get some basics down
While I agree with you that Cisco's documentation and setup ease is lacking and could use a lot of improvement, you need to understand that there is no way around learning some networking basics with an IOS or like device. For a device of this nature, you want the most low-level OS possible for the most reliable operation. There is a reason that the Cisco 2500 and now 2600 series is the most popular router in the world.
