Cartel needs a slap down
"Instead, it would be designed to block people from uploading their copies of TV shows to the Net, whether through file-swapping services like Kazaa or other means"

This is simply not true.

"PCs, DVD recorders and other devices would check for the flag and block Internet distribution of any file that included it. "

This is not true either. So thats it now, we're reduced to out and out lies? No technical arguments, no contrived misdirections, just straight lies from the MPAA?

"More to the point, if the flag isn't implemented, Hollywood might not trust digital television enough to license movies to broadcast networks, studios say. "

Hollywood sells to broadcast TV (despite the VCR) simply because Hollywood needs the sales. If they don't want to sell, then they can stop selling.

This is just a crude attempt at blackmail, but it clearly shows that *hollywood* (really the collection of major studios) is operating as a cartel and needs more competition.

There are plenty of US independants and non US film makers making great movies who will happily fill the void if these companies stop supplying broadcast TV. But again, this points to a cartel acting like it controls the single supply of movies, which is a clear pointer to a distribution cartel.
