Itanium had good prospects when SGI chose it. Intel simply
soiled their pants when they saw little AMD moving so quickly and successfully with their Opterons and so Intel in their UNECESSARY panick pushed Itanium developemtn aside and wne back to COMPETE with miniscule AMD.

That is rediculous. If Intel cannot pull off a 1/2-way decent processor then WHO can afford it? But again AMD is proof that it is NOT the size that matters but determinations and creativity. Even SUN with its meager resources could come up with something that has fewer than 31 pipeline stages... wink

Too bad SGI is a good company in terms of technology. I guess it is the "visionary" who makes or breakes everything....
