Too bad that SGI put all their eggs in the Itanium basket
Itanium-2 was good THREE years ago. Unfortunately, Intel's policy to let it out to dry pulled SGI down with it.

SGI could had tried to enter the Opteron Cluster or even an Opteron SMP business. The true asset of SGI is the Numalink/NUMAFLES SMP interconnect for ccNUMA systems. It can pull a 512 processors SMP with Linux! That is quite a fit!

Too bad that a good technolog company with good track in innovation and solid systems (Origins2K, 03800, Altix, BX2, etc) is going down so unceremoniously (all the while BS-tech companies like MS are raking in billions $$$ by selling CRAP with translucent icons !)
