Vferrara-You are missing the point
You are missing several points here. Dell is beginning to decay. Businesses, such as the law firm I work for as head of MIS, bought Dell because it reduced costs and support efforts. If another $30 made for good customer support then fine.

Dell, up until a few years ago made a very good computer. Their customer service and tech support went on a quick slide, downward, when they went to off-shore support. Even if they brought the old support back today, I would have a certain level of mistrust.

Finally, in most MIS situation, it is NOT the MIS department making the final decision on the purchase. I am lucky because after several years the partners of the firm have given me total control, with them approving the purchase budget after I have made the selection. This does not mean they do not ask questions, they do, but they finally realized I have to support what is purchased. I doubt Dell will be on the bid list this year. I want to faze out the last of the Dells we have. Why...very, very poor customer service and tech support.

In this year's purchases I am considering building the units within my department, as we did about seven years ago. I can build the units with brand name high quality parts, get a better warranty, and same money.

Dell units have problems like undersized power supplies, too little cooling, poor turn-around on replacement parts. Those are the problems I have seen with Dell in the past few years.

Following your original logic IBM would be the top PC seller as they pretty much control the main frame business. IBM blew PC's many years ago. Dell is following that path, and the jury is out on Gateway.
