Oh the tragedy! NOT!
""School education should be about cooperation and sharing knowledge, which is exactly what open source is about - that's why I can't understand why schools don't embrace it on that level," he said, adding there is a "big black hole" when it comes to Linux in education."

From the article itself, the bottom line is if you have a problem with schools, which are budget strapped as it is, using what is cost effective to obtain new tools to teach with then maybe you need to re-think your philosophy. I don't see how this story is either tragic or aggravating in the least.

Students can, will and do learn far more about computers and technology with Open Source because it is wide open and available for ALL to see without restrictions. It also assists with teaching how the software / hardware interfaces function and work. I learned more in the first 6 months of using Linux than I ever have using Microsoft Windows. So by personal experience I was able to utilize the capacity of Open Source to better understand how these things work.

Open Source gave me access to good code in a variety of languages to review and modify while I was a CIS major. This gave me a leg up on my Windows counter parts in many ways.

""The kids love their lab and have a lot of ownership. We take it seriously how they feel about lab, and they enjoy that it works," Rushton said. "The tinker value of Linux is brilliant and kids love to tinker so they organize their desktop in a way most people couldn't understand it.""

This tid-bit at the end pretty much sums up the power of Open Source and Linux in schools. School is about learning and growing and expanding horizons and possibilities. It's about learning politics and governments and infrastructures. It's about exposure to more than one way of thinking to promote critical thinking and the ability to weigh options based on value of choice.

If you wish to prevent these core foundations of learning centers then move to China or some other oppressive state nation. The rest of us want to learn, question, grow. devil
