IBM warms to Opteron
IBM was the first to stand by AMD at the podium when Opteron was first introduced in 2003. It brought out one of the first 2-CPU servers for Opteron. But then it just went to sleep on Opteron. Both HP & Sun took up the Opteron cheerleading, when IBM should've been the favoured one in AMD's books. One has to assume that Intel told it to back off from Opteron, and offered it large sums of money in the form of advertising.

IBM's X3 chipset does a fantastic job of turning a hapless Xeon into something worth comparing to an Opteron. But that shouldn't have blinded IBM from also following through with an Opteron strategy. Now it looks like it's finally seen the light (again).

One has to imagine that this is all happening now because Intel is no longer able to defend its territory with bribes and threats. AMD's lawsuit has put Intel's business practices under the microscope, and now Intel is losing marketshare in torrents. Intel is burning through its cash horde by the billions, what used to be a $14B cash horde a year ago, has now dwindled to $7B -- all going to defend Intel's stock price.
