AMD and Apple
If all any company had to worry about was one component out
of a product then the best available at the time of manufacture
'might' be the one the consumer gets. Unfortunately in business
there are a lot of trade-offs.

Apple has stated that the Intel roadmap has some great
products coming that will allow Apple to make some interesting
new products. Maybe AMD doesn't have that ability or enough
capacity to provide parts for what Apple envisions. I know this
sounds like the kind of vapourware we get from other
companies all the time, "Just wait for the next big thing, it'll be
great."

Companies also have to look at compatibility with there existing
AND future products, along with those of the compitition.
PowerPC architecture was ahead of the Pentium stuff for some
time, but that has changed. A lot of little modules inside that
give the new chips their speed have evolved into a mature
blending instead of a 'keep up with the Joneses' menagerie.

I do think that AMD has some of the best chips available today
and if that were the only consideration then the voices of many
here on the forums is probably right, Apple should go AMD, not
Intel. However, AMD has problems keeping up with the numbers
of units that would be needed (right now, at least) and we have
no clue when Intel is going to leapfrog AMD (even if it is the old
brute force method).
