Here's why
For many applications, Linux is MUCH faster than Solaris. For instance, PostgreSQL on Linux on sparc is, in my experience, about 50 to 100% faster.

Java app servers running under linux on X86 are noticeably faster than on Sparc / Solaris. Also, you can often build a farm of X86 blade or 1U servers as java app servers for a fraction of what it would cost to do so on Sparc hardware.

Secondly, if you want Solaris, you don't need a Sparc machine, X86 Solaris runs pretty well on the new AMD processors.
