The Sun strategy
The current strategy is two-pronged:
1) Ramp up new feature development in Solaris, so that it blows by what current Linux can offer. Solaris is open-sourced and free now. So the additional value in the software helps Sun sell their hardware.
2) Make Solaris as good on x86 as it is on Sparc; and push Sun's x86 Opteron hardware (Galaxy line of servers. Having the premium features and quality of Solaris on x86 match the quality of Solaris-Sparc will help seed the sales of Sun's Galaxy line. The hope is that customers may use Solaris x86 (since it's free) on non-Sun hardware, have a good experience with Solaris, and then decide to go "single vendor" and get some Galaxy servers the next time.

To sum up, the goal is that making Solaris open source, and pushing the envelope on features, should help sell both Sun's Sparc and Opteron server lines. It may begin slowly, as customers just take advantage of the "freeness" of Solaris; but the idea is that a good experience with that will translate into the customer perception that Sun has quality products, and can offer full end-to-end quality solutions. And big corporations like getting things from a single vendor when possible, rather than mix and match.
