- Gateway misadventures & future???
-
I agree that Gateway (GTW) should bring back the talking cow. They were some of the best TV ads in recent history. Ted Waitt, himself, was the voice of the cow, in addition to it was really him in the ads.
As a stockholder in GTW, I have very serious reservations about the eMachine buyout. Buy eMachine has the access to big time retail slots. My concerns is that the support from eMachine is so bad it is the stuff legends are made of. Gateway's support is normally fairly good. If Gateway improves support for eMachine they should be fine; if they reduce their support to the dismal quality of eMachine they are gone.
I also agree they need to look at doing some Linus desktops. It might be worth trying. I also think they need to exploit the contract eMachine has for AMD chips. Gateway has been Intel only for several years now. AMD has much to offer, for the dollar. (yen, pound, or whatever..)
As to the comment about Apple. If you dig deep into Apple's very extensive financials you will find they make very little or no money on computers, especially desktops. They appears to make no money in their retail efforts. They do make money on the iPod. A good deal of it.
Gateway has made some good moves in the retail stores. According to the information I have seen they are making good money on the large screen plasma and LCD TV's. Their digital cameras have been well received and received good reviews. They need to do a good tie in with Sony or Onkyo for audio. Bose does not cut it.
If GTW (Gateway) improves eMachine support and keep their support up they will be able to make it, if not they are history. Dell has taken a kick in the pants for poor support. They deserved it off-shoring business product was not a good move for them, and they know it now. GTW needs to keep that as a lesson to remember.
