Is the most eco-freindly way of recycling a machine. Just make sure the Hard Drive really is blank- by zero writting it at least 3 times and then re-writting the part table and installing a an OS (Win 9X that came with the computer, FreeDOS, or a Lite *Nix) , if desired.

Or just take the HD out and keep it until it completly fails then take a drill bitt and drill a hole through the platters.

After you do that sell the machine (With dleaned HD or no HD) on E-Bay, Your Local Garage Sale, Flea Market, or give it away.
