- Novell and Apple On Board
-
This article is the likely reason (outside of negligent or criminal management, which is possibly even more likely) for the Vista delay announced earlier this week.
For a decade executives have been schooled by Microsoft to expected PCs to replace mainframes. Unfortunately mainframes have long supported threading with IBM's system 390 being a great example and that single item has allowed mainframes to perform at less cost with less power than server farms.
The multi-core "business PCs" Intel is introducing to the market obsolete code written in C and C++ which must be cut up into chunks by smart coders and smart compilers in order to thread well.
Compare and contrast with Java - especially Java Applets and it is easy to see why Microsoft is so behind everyone else. The coding in Java lends itself to multi-core. In fact it takes less than a minute to convert a standard applet to a threaded one. That applet will take full advantage of multi-core hardware. And there is no downside. In fact every applet should be threaded and this has been known since 2000.
So when Microsoft started chatting Applets (which have fallen out of favor owing to Microsoft's anti-Java retoric) we should have known Vista was about to be relegated to toy status.
FYI, Intel has been working with everyone it can including the Open Source Linux folks for quite some time to make this new hardware work. They have been frustrated by Microsoft in efforts to make Vista multi-core ready. Note what Novell is doing with Linux and what Apple has done with its new hardware offering. Note that every IBM developmet tool it sells now runs on Red Hat Linux because of Intel's efforts in bringing the new hardware to market.
Now start counting Java applet capable phones as business computers. Then factor in the Oracle Sun 10 year partnership and see that every IT decision maker in business who selects Microsoft must be viewed as having been influence peddled by one of the Gates family Abramoffs.
Yes Abramoff billed Microsoft for services and of course he started his loby carrer at Preston Gates and Ellis, the Gates family law/lobby firm. Even after Microsoft left the family firm he still served Microsoft. This truth on its own requires EU Sanctions. But lets not pretend Microsoft can not recover. It can and Intel and many others stand by ready to ligitimize the company and make it great again. But Allchin and Ballmer have to go and go fast.
