it's x86_64 all the way down
there's no bottom to come from - big iron has been dead for a long time, but the PHB's just don't know it yet. big iron has never meant fast or even high-memory computers. the iron really refers to disk platters (right - no really iron!). and x86 has been doing very large IO for a long time now. observe that if you want really fast IO today, you choose something like Lustre or at least a FC san with lots of spindles. no reason to avoid x86, since AMD's innovation has given it serious legs.
