It makes more sense to have the main board contain the drive logic and head amps (off drive, like cornice). If you put the logic (for example iPod) inside the drive, you are limiting the drive to one device (there are others out there, even the ones that preceded iPod). Plus you still have the human interface and audio amplifer to deal with.

Besides, with 1 inch or less drives, there is not much room to put electronics inside the drive. So it makes more sense to make the drive truly generic, like a memory chip.
