The obvious alternative is to embed the end functinality into the drive.
Why not just build (say) the iPod logic right into
the drive and be done with it? Surely the volumes of
some of these devices (combined with the intelligence
that's already built into the disk's microcontroller)
start to make this an attractive alternative.

Hmmm... music devices, video record/play devices, GPS devices...
