I agree that Sun would increase market share if they sold Intel as well, but Sun really isn't in the commodity market. Because of this, they can afford to limit their offerings to Opteron. I would imagine they also came to this decision based on Opteron performance, power consumption(they do make 48V DC servers for telecom), and development costs. If Sun wanted to invest in the comodity market, not only would they be offering Xeon based servers, we may have seen them offer Atholon and Pentium workstations as well.
That said, I think they need to consider it, especially now that they GPL'd their cash cow processor. With the increased competition they have just created for themselves with the OpenSparc project, and the fact that Solaris was basically given away even before it was open sourced. They need to bulk up in other areas, possibly by diversifying their server and workstation lines further, or by following IBMs footsteps and adding more focus to support contracts. - Posted by: jheine Posted on: 03/21/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
