What?
They chose AMD to head off Intel Itanium and dropped Intel X86 to not give Intel any money. Well done, you just killed any chance for widespread Solaris adoption, you idiot McNeally.

Dell only sells Intel chips. They have done that for years. Does that mean they are losing because they chose Intel over AMD? Or are you saying that Intel is the only market to go with for success? And why is Dell looking now at AMD lines?

AMD chips have usually been cheaper and, in many cases, outperformed their equiv Intel chip. AMD was also first to do production release of 64-bit processors for servers with the Opteron line. Chosing the cheaper, and available, processors seemed like a smart business decision over waiting for Intel to release something sometime to market at possibly higher cost.

What has killed Sun is not their lack of using Intel processors. But rather its their dependence on their Sparc servers. These units cost way too much and performance, from my experience, was not superior to their x86 lines. Currently, almost three quarters of Sun's server sales are now using the cheaper chip sets instead of the Sparcs. Sun needs to continue this migration and get out of the chip business altogether.
