Building a home network and using NAS is not hard....well, not very hard.
Setting up a home network isn't that hard, but takes a little research and patience. Emphasize, it isn't that hard, but its not easy. All you need is a router, some cables and a couple of computers. Security on your network is also critical. Keep in mind:
Change default password/administration accounts.
Wireless: use WPA, a complicated key, TKIP, and MAC filtering. Don't broadcast your SSID.

NAS...simpletech offers the simpleshare device. Can I say that? I'm certainly not advertising for them. The device is easy enough to set up and has a web-based management console. Creating shares is relatively simple, and it offers disk mirroring. It will support a network shared printer via a USB port.

Add in a network management tool, I won't mention names, but there is a pretty decent one for pretty cheap. You don't need one though if you do a little google searching on managing your network.

Synchronization software is helpful, and again, I've found a decent one with a decent pricetag. Keeps my files incrementally synced across local, removable, and nas drives.

Lastly, keep software firewall/av in place and up to date.

Once its up...you can add in network media players, network print servers, apple even offers a nice device for playing itunes through your stereo over a wireless network.

Simple, right? Its not too bad.

Good luck. Once you have it running, you'll love it.
