HP: first Itanium Partner, next
Itanium defector....

It is the irony of modern times that the once proponents and creators of a technological solution become at a later stage one of the many defectors.

It is also ironic that only AFTER Itanium became a decent chip, so many defections to the enemie's camp appeared!

HP pretty much designed the IA64 ISA and I am most certain they had a big say in its implementations. Now, the current realities of a more decent 64-bit x86 implementation has forced HP to make allies with the enemies at AMD. But who can blame HP since even Intel woke up from the Bliss of (t)Itanic computing to realize that a 64-bit extension of the crappy IA-32 is a better vehicle for transition to 64-bit computing.

All truth told, the x86 is the distand past and there is no much future to it. Itanium implemented properly (with builtin multithreading) is a better processor.

Oh boy, let's see what HP is going to do when the 64-bit versions of P4 and xeon come out. They currently support:

- alpha
- openVMS
- Tru64 Unix

- Itanium
- ms windwoes
- linux
- HP-UX 11.0 Unix

- Xeon/P4
- ms windwoes

- PA8000
- HP UX 11.0
- Linux?

- Prescott?
-??

HP looked good after the merger with Compaq. No it looks confused like the spaghetti windows code.

In the meantime Power 5 looks better and better and even poor Sun is daring to design the Ultra IV and V.

Interesting times...
