Then and now
Before this article came out, I always thought IBM was a big inventor, I couldn't exactly recall anything particular groundbreaking about their newer inventions, but I figured they must be there, I just didn't hear about them .

But what you're saying doesn't tie up with my memory and none of it is new. I recall the IBM PC as a poor competitor to the Apple II that was sold on the back of the IBM name, not an invention at all, but simply better marketted, IBM701 sounds like the same, not inventive, just better marketing. Magnetic storage, well thats misleading, since magnetic tape was 1951 for the Univac, at best they can claim Magnetic *Disks*.

In each case where IBM actually invented the thing, they made a factory and business around the invention and sold the products. For exampe they sold Mainframe database products built around SQL. IBM perfected magnetic disks, then made and sold disk drives. Real products tested and debugged in the market place.

Now I notice that when I search the invention list, the patents are combinational and none of them make it to products.

It looks to me like IBM is reforming itself into a pure patent troll, in stark contrast to their history inventing and making products.
