And if you really read the article, instead of (as some here have) responding based upon a knee-jerk reaction, you see that Donofrio says:

"That is not to say that the 21st century does not also require invention, creation and discovery, he said. But these days, people are looking for value that arises from a creation and not just looking at technology for its sake, he explained."

He's saying that YES, there WILL be new invention, just as there always has been. But it's not just about the invention, it's about what is done with it. IBM's past is littered with wonderful inventions that made other companies a lot of money, and they're not the only ones with that problem. Donofrio's point is that innovation will primarily be about applying inventions to a problem, not coming up with (as bigpicture notes)things like transporters and flying saucers.

Think about the differentiation between "little things" *invented* during fundamental research, like microprocessors and transistors, and the "big things" they brought about - those things that were mankind-changing *innovations*.
