What's NEXT...?
We are talking about the next big thing in Information Technology here. Not the "Beam Me Up Scotty" transporters, and flying saucers.

What could be the next NEW big thing in Information Technology? Artificial Intelligence? Real Language Recognition? The IBM research labs are working on these already and then some. But these will not come full force into the market place as finished products, like say the IBM PC did in the 1980s, their development and adoption will be incremental. I think this is what the article is about.

That IS the $64,000 question. We don't know, cause it hasn't been invented yet. But there's even a chance it's already on the drawing board.

MP3 players, as a for instance, were around before the iPod. Until then, they were a small niche market and then Jobs & Co. released one that was a lot more user friendly. Suddenly you couldn't swing the proverbial dead cat without hitting someone who had one.

It's like Bill Gates and his infamous comments on the DOS 640K limit and how no one would EVER need more memory than that. Gee. How utterly and totally WRONG was that comment?

But are we surprised by any such comment coming from IBM's camp? Not hardly. They've dumped their PC business. Why? Because they had no further vision for future enhancements.

For what it's worth, voice recognition, as utterly "kewl" as it may seem on Star Trek and other places is quite impractical for day to day use especially in a modern cube farm. There's just too much ambient noise around one from people walking by to make something like that worth the effort. Simply training an app like Dragon Naturally Speaking in such an environment is pretty close to impossible.
