- RE: "HOW ABOUT PERFORMANCE/COST RATIO?"
-
I can't even begin to imagine that the Conroe chips will be in anything afforable to the average joe to start with. And on top of that, how big of a cooling unit is it going to need for that kind of speed they are boasting about.
Honestly speaking, if the Conroe chips are going to be out later this year, AMD will probaly fire back with some faster chips. Also, not to mention, AMD could hypothecially incorporate some features of a Cell chip, considering the fact the IBM and AMD are now sharing a Fab plant. I'm garnnering on the fact that they are probaly both co-developing faster chips but at lower prices.
All in all, i really don't think Intel is going to have anything convincing in speed performance, especially when you consider by the time you and I will see that speed advantage the next version of windows with stiffle that out pretty quickly.
Also, yet i not mention that AMD has been the first person/company at the door with inovations for PC chips, breaking the 1GHz barrier first, then breaking the 32bit to 64-bit transition barrier. All in the modesty of keeping the cost of chips down.
In the overall picture that, a better and faster computer now a day's is not solely based on the CPU anymore. You now have better access to things such as faster memory, bus speeds, video cards, a lot faster hard drives (a plug for the oncoming SATA II drives, 300/MBps a second baby) of which these 4 items make or break how well a CPU performs. What good is having a 8GHz cpu if you got only 256 megs of memory, with a ATA/100 hard drive and a built-on video card, not much!
