These competitions matter only to the elite who buy the fastest chip available the instant it becomes available. It's their benchmark ego - they put it in their messageboard signatures, they make t-shirts, and gloat about having the fastest system around. To everyone that actually enjoys getting out of the house every once in a while, it means nothing.

So, you're right, price:perfomance is usually the deciding factor.
